The University of Tartu Viljandi Academy of Culture has good relations and previous successful cooperation with the University of Namibia (UNAM), during which (the Academy of Creative Economy held in 2023) the need and interest for further (strategic/long-term) cooperation at institutional level was identified.
Similar to Namibia, Uganda, Botswana and Kenya have strong potential in the field of creative industries and also face similar challenges (high unemployment, lack of access to the labour market, low participation of women in the labour market).
The microcredit programmes for creative projects take into account the high local potential of the creative industries (including existing developments in universities, e.g. UNAM) and contribute to the development of managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Microcredit training will help learners in terms of individual goal-setting, understanding global trends, idea generation, understanding the sectoral background and context (creative industries), marketing communication, project management frameworks, leadership theories, workflow management and teamwork.

Project objectives

The goal of this project is to support the development of the African (Namibia, Uganda, Botswana, Kenia) creative industry and related ecosystems by providing women/youth access to sector specific entrepreneurship education (creative project management microdegrees).

Actions and results

Developing entrepreneurial competences of women/youth contributes to better access to local job markets (individuaal perspective) and to the improvement of African creative industry ecosystems (community perspective).
The project will provide 15 people in the African creative business sector with business and management skills. Those skills can be utilized to gain employement in an existing organization (focus on a wide range of skills including project management) or to create your own business.
During three quarters (two microdegree programs in 2024/25 Fall semester and one in Spring semester) a total of three microdegree programs will be delivered (Creativity and Self Development, Project Management in Creative Entrepreneurship, Team Management and Leadership). Those activities are preceeded by a marketing campaign starting in May 2024. Every student will receive personal coaching during their studies. At the end of the program, feedback is gathered. All activities will be carried out in cooperation with either local or international partners.
