​​Estonia funds new projects in Armenia to support quality education, empower refugees and promote democracy

After an eight-year break, Armenia is once again one of the priority countries for Estonian development cooperation.

This year, four projects totalling 165,000 euros received funding from the 2024 Armenia application round organised by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV).

According to Kairi Saar-Isop, the director general of the Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Armenia has taken important domestic and foreign political steps to move closer to a democratic space of values ​​and the European Union. "Considering this, we are launching development cooperation activities. One of the first steps was a visit to Armenia with partners to create contacts and connections that would lead to successful projects," said Saar-Isop.

Altogether, 10 project applications were submitted. The funding round focused on supporting Armenia's development in three areas: promoting democracy, empowering refugees and improving the quality of education.

Funded projects

SA Estonian Business School: "Yerevan Haybusak University (YHU) curriculum reform consulting and introduction of modern teaching methodologies" aims to develop the core competency of curriculum development based on learning outcomes at YHU, which would enable the university to apply the quality assurance principles of the European Higher Education Area in curriculum reform and implementation.

Garage48: "Creating educational technology solutions in Armenia" aims to create ICT solutions for the Armenian education sector, to increase local entrepreneurial and digital competencies, and to support the growth of the local startup mentoring community.

The Peipsi Center for Transboundary Cooperation: "Employment Empowerment of Nagorno-Karabakh Refugees for the Development of Agricultural Entrepreneurship" empowers internally displaced persons so that they acquire (or improve) practical skills and knowledge to work in agriculture and start their own businesses.

NGO Mondo: "Promoting civic activism and good governance practices in the Shirak region of Armenia through raising awareness of education workers on gender equality issues.”

Grant: 18,000 euros

Development cooperation between Estonia and Armenia

ESTDEV’s priority areas of cooperation with Armenia are education, democracy and good governance, poverty reduction, including improving the situation of children and women living in poverty, small business development and supporting innovation.

Since 2001, Estonia has implemented 58 development cooperation projects in Armenia, contributing 862,000 euros to the country’s development.
